My mom had a one-in-a-million zest for life, and I’m not exaggerating when I say she lived every day to its fullest. Be like Eileen, and don’t take a single moment for granted (or a single item of clothing at face value). But also, be proactive, get tested, and spread the word. Do it! I insist! (Yes I am nagging you through this article, just as my mom would have.) Please get tested for BRCA gene mutations and other hereditary cancers, so that you can live out the rest of your lives like my mom desperately wished she could have. Do it for yourself, do it for your family, do it for me, and most importantly do it for Eileen.

A Note from our Team

Your generosity and unwavering support made this effort possible. Thank you for believing in us and for upholding Eileen’s legacy! A first-of-its-kind endeavor, the initiative brings specialized, coordinated care to predisposed individuals at higher risk for cancers due to inherited genetic mutations. Researchers have identified more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes, with the most frequent cancers being breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, bile duct, gallbladder cancers, and others.

The initiative, named in Eileen’s honor, is a destination for patients to receive personalized screening, risk reduction strategies, and specialized survivorship care to fight the cancers linked to a genetic mutation. The very first patient to be seen in the clinic, Tracy Milgram, shared with us the following quote about her
experience:

“As someone who has carried a genetic mutation for 20 years, I had to go to different clinics to try to coordinate and keep up with the prevention plan all by myself. It was nearly impossible, especially because in this emerging field, new variants are identified, and recommendations are updated often. I needed support navigating through all the recommendations for my genetic mutation and the expertise to help me prevent the cancer I was at a higher risk for. The Eileen Youtie Predisposition Syndrome Initiative at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is a program needed in our community. It offers patients like me coordinated care, genetic counseling, a personalized care and prevention plan, psycho-social support, access to Sylvester experts in cancer high-risk, education about genetic predisposition syndromes and survivorship care. I feel empowered, informed, supported, encouraged and am grateful to finally have the comprehensive care needed for my genetic predisposition to cancer. This program will absolutely prevent hereditary cancers and provide help to those dealing with cancer and their loved ones.” Like Tracy— the very first patient— we remain most grateful for your support of
Eileen’s dream, and we are proud that with you by our side we can continue to support these efforts.

Dr. Carmen Calfa, Eileen’s breast oncologist and partner in this mission was on hand to oversee the clinic opening. “I’m overjoyed to see our dream come true. Eileen was a great advocate for universal genetic testing for those at high risk,” said Dr. Calfa. “Thankfully, she was able to see how impactful her advocacy was in her lifetime. She desired patients to have access not only to testing but also to experts and options readily available to help with important next steps as well as prevention. That is what this initiative, named in her honor, will do and we’re proud to lead the way, break new boundaries in cancer care and prevention and honor her special legacy at Sylvester.”
